On Thanksgiving of annus horribilis 2020, I will be first thankful for Black People, and the contributions that they’ve made to American culture, i.e. most of the best of American culture. I am thankful to the LGBTQ community for their bravery and joy and perseverance in rejecting cruel and untrue definitions and labels, in pursuit of the simple acceptance and self-determination that is every person’s right. I am thankful for burned flags and toppled statues and free speech. I am thankful for every incremental destruction of the Greeting Card façade that “Thanksgiving” represents; And to hell with the puritans, with their stupid hats, bonnets and buckles.
